    Most of us have pets in our homes. We might do this for enjoyment, or in the case of  dogs, for security.

    But did you know that animals are also good for your health? Many studies have shown this to be the case, and for reasons you could probably guess.

    Here is an article from Fox News on five animals that can make a positive impact on your health.

    Studies link dog ownership to lower blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, plus a reduced risk of heart disease. A 2011 review in the Journal of physical activity and Health found that dog owners are 34 percent more likely to meet their exercise requirements (based on the federal guidelines) than nonowners.

    What are the five animals beside dogs? They are cats, fish, birds, and horses.

    Working out for most people is not an enjoyable activity. But people workout anyway because it keeps them healthy.  An hour a day of exercise makes a big difference on how we feel.

    A lot of people walk, jog or workout with a friend and find this makes them much more likely to stay focused enough to make this part of their daily routine.

    Every now and then I find through the clutter of the Internet a resource for health and fitness news that proves to be quite valuable. This blog and the tools at its sister site fit that profile.

    The Hello Healthy Blog covers all sorts of information related to diet and fitness. New information on a variety of topics is posted daily. On a recent day the blog included postings on how to lower sugar intake, a 20-minute workout video, and a list of reasons as to why running is so good for you.

    The Hello Healthy Blog is actually run by myfitnesspal.com. Over 65 million people access this site. It includes an app for your phone to log what you eat and you can count the calories on a daily basis. It also has a “community” arrangement where you can work with other people to lose weight. Studies clearly show that if a person monitors their intake that more weight is lost.

    Fitness and health information is more abundant than ever now, but good information is not always easy to find. Using resources like the Hello Healthy Blog to help you achieve your health goals is a form of preventive care.
